A painted postcard of a small blackbird with a satchel among hawthorn blossom.

A letter for your young musician

Dear young musician,

I'm curled up in my egg, waiting. I can't see you yet, but I can hear you. Will you play me something? Then I can come out and say hello.

Love,a blackbird(you'll get to choose my name)

Lonán is a gentle practice companion for children aged 6 to 12. Their blackbird hatches, grows and explores the more they play.

The story so far

From egg to explorer.

  1. A speckled egg in a mossy nest.

    Chapter one

    An egg arrives.

It sits in a mossy nest, waiting. Only music will wake it, so the first notes your child plays make it wobble.

  2. A tiny blackbird peeking out of a cracked egg.

    Chapter two

    Someone hatches.

A tiny blackbird pops out to say hello, and your child chooses its name.

  3. A blackbird in a nest in an old hawthorn tree.

    Chapter three

    A home in the hawthorn.

It settles into the old hawthorn and grows a little with every practice. Missed days never set it back.

Chapter four · Off exploring

Off to discover the world.

As the weeks go by, their blackbird flies off to meet the neighbours. Each one plays something, and each visit sends home a postcard and a new tune.

  • A blackbird listening to a hedgehog play the fiddle by a hawthorn hedge.
Met Fiadh at the Hawthorn Hedge. She taught me a jig!
  • A heron playing a low whistle on a jetty while a blackbird listens from a stepping stone.
Old Corr played his low whistle at Heron's Pool. So calm.
  • A fox playing a drum beside a blackbird at a standing stone.
Rua and I kept the beat at the Fox Stone.

Postcards arrive as little surprises after practice, never as a reward to earn.

For grown-ups: the back of the postcard

Dear grown-up,

Here's the honest version. Your child taps Start and their blackbird listens while they play. It grows a little, and every so often it goes exploring. You get a simple weekly view, and a card you can send to their teacher before the lesson.

It will never:

  • Show ads
  • Sell anything to your child
  • Sulk about a missed day
  • Record your child
  • To: families with young musicians
  • Ages 6 to 12
  • Piano, violin, guitar, whistle and more
  • iPhone and iPad, coming in 2027

P.S. for music teachers

Hand your families a small card. Parents who opt in send you a weekly practice snapshot before the lesson. No dashboard, no extra admin.
